What Is a Tongue-Tie
A tongue-tie is this little thing that happens when the tissue under a baby’s tongue (called the frenulum) is too tight, short, or thick. It basically ties the tongue down, so it can’t move freely the way it’s supposed to. Some babies have a mild tongue-tie, and you’d never notice, but for others, it can cause some real challenges—especially with breastfeeding. When the baby can’t move their tongue properly, they can struggle to latch or suck effectively. That means they might not get enough milk, or they may get tired and frustrated during feeds. For moms, this often leads to really sore nipples (seriously, ouch!) and a lot of stress because feeding gets harder than it should be.
It doesn’t always stop there— a tongue-tie can also affect how babies eat solid foods later or even how they pronounce certain sounds when they start talking. The good news is, if it’s causing problems, it’s usually a quick fix. There’s a quick, in-office procedure called a frenotomy where the doctor just snips or lasers the tissue, and often, babies are instantly better at latching. Of course, not all tongue-ties need treatment, so it’s worth checking with a pediatrician or lactation consultant if you’re struggling. You’re definitely not alone—it’s super common! Personal Experience
The Alabama Tongue-Tie treated my daughter for her tongue-tie. Breastfeeding was extremely painful (to the point of causing me to pump full time rather than breastfeed prior to the tongue-tie release), my daughter would fall asleep breastfeeding, she made a clicking noise when feeding, she had severe reflux and extreme tightness throughout her body, and the list could go on for all of the boxes she checked on symptoms of a tongue-tie. Many don’t realize the impact this tiny restriction can have on babies. My lactation consultant recommended mentioning a possible tongue-tie to my daughter’s pediatrician early on. On day 3 of her life, I told the pediatrician and he responded by saying that since it was not causing any issues (not sure which issues he missed when I mentioned them to him!), I shouldn’t put her through an unnecessary surgery. (Please learn from me. Don’t allow a pediatrician to talk you out of being evaluated. It could save you months of misery or, at the very least, offer you some peace of mind.)
